TMJ TMD Treatment
TMD Dental Devices in Ottawa
When left untreated, temporomandibular disorder (TMD) can interfere with normal activities like eating and speaking. Our dental team has seen many patients suffering from jaw pain, headaches, and other painful symptoms related to TMD. We offer multiple options for dental devices to prevent TMD, reduce pain, and protect your jaw.
What is TMD?
A temporomandibular disorder is a condition that affects the temporomandibular joints (TMJ). TMJs are located just below the ears and connect the upper and lower jaw. One sign of TMD is a clicking or popping sound when you open or close your mouth. Other symptoms can include:
- Headaches
- Neck pain
- Jaw pain
- Ear pain
- Sore or weak jaw muscles
- Difficulty opening and closing the mouth
Dental Appliances for Temporomandibular Disorders
There are two types of dental appliances used to treat TMD: Occlusal splints and night guards (or mouth guards). Both devices are typically made of thin, clear plastic that is custom fit to the teeth. An occlusal splint works by holding the top and bottom teeth together, while a night guard or mouth guard holds the teeth apart.
Both of these devices can be relatively comfortable to wear when they’re designed and manufactured by dental professionals. The type of device you need may depend on the reason for your TMD, which can be caused by jaw injuries, genetics, arthritis, or clenching or grinding your teeth (also known as Bruxism).
If you have been experiencing jaw pain, bruxism, or TMD, our experienced dentists can help provide treatment options. Reach out to Apple’s Dental Group to book your next appointment.
